Con Games
Con artists build elaborate webs of deception, preying on human psychology to turn their marks’ own trust, vanity, and greed against them. These tales of manipulation center on some of cinema’s craftiest tricksters: from the charming Depression-era scoundrels played by Paul Newman and Robert Redford in The Sting to Joe Mantegna’s seductive gambler in House of Games to Nicolas Cage’s hyperneurotic flimflammer chasing one last score in Matchstick Men . There’s undeniable pleasure to be had in these stories—even a certain pleasure in letting ourselves be taken in by their beguiling duplicity.
