Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier’s first feature crackles with a fresh, nouvelle vague–inspired energy as it traces the evolving friendship between Phillip (Anders Danielsen Lie) and Erik (Espen Klouman Høiner), two literary-minded twenty-somethings who dream of becoming successful writers. When Phillip’s novel becomes an overnight sensation while Erik collects rejection letters, their lives start to spin off in radically different directions. Embracing an anything-goes spirit of formalist experimentation, Trier captures both the heady freedom and anxious confusion of early adulthood.
