The Tempest

Iconoclastic stage and film director Julie Taymor boldly reimagines Shakespeare’s immortal final play with this visually explosive, gender-swapped adaptation. In casting Helen Mirren as Prospera (traditionally the male Prospero), Taymor lends new resonance to the tale of the banished sorcerer who, raging at her exile on a remote island, conjures an enormous storm to shipwreck her enemies and exact vengeance. Featuring dynamic performances from an all-star cast that includes Ben Whishaw, Djimon Hounsou, Felicity Jones, Alfred Molina, and Alan Cumming, THE TEMPEST transforms one of the Bard’s greatest achievements into a hallucinatory dreamscape bursting with otherworldly enchantment.
