The Water Murmurs

Winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or for Best Short Film, this dreamily poetic vision of aqueous apocalypse is a mesmerizing meditation on the fragility of both human connection and life on Earth. When an asteroid hits the planet, underwater volcanic eruptions submerge a riverside town, causing inhabitants to flee inland. The day before leaving, Nian (Annabel Yao) says goodbye to a childhood friend, along the way crossing paths with various residents of the town. Gradually, her memories of the village become clearer and clearer.
