The Cockettes

Even amid the proudly nonconformist counterculture of psychedelic San Francisco in the late 1960s and early ’70s, the gender-bending burlesque performance art provocateurs The Cockettes stood out for their outrageous, glitter-bedecked costumes and gleefully campy productions. In this joyous documentary, directors David Weissman and Bill Weber bring to life the history of these pioneers of queer culture, whose creative exuberance would influence everything from the glitter rock era of David Bowie and Elton John to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
